NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

Knowledge-Based Integrated Sustainable Agriculture in Nepal (KISAN II) Project was a Feed the Future Initiative funded by USAID. Within the umbrella of Ministry of Agriculture and Development (MOAD), technical assistance for implementation of the project was provided by a consortium led by Winrock International and Center for Environmental and Agricultural Policy Research, Extension and Development (CEAPRED) as a consortium partner. It was a five-year project started in Aug 2017 and implemented in 24 hill and Terai districts of 5 provinces (province 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7) of Nepal. The project aimed to cover about 200000 households in the project districts.

Launching the five-year project presented a significant opportunity to strengthen and expand Nepal’s agricultural sector. KISAN II represented a major expansion of KISAN’s proven graduated approach to market systems strengthening, which assessed the needs of farmers, change agents, and private sector firms in Nepal and provided tailored technical assistance to support their progression from vulnerable and developing stages to commercially oriented, self-reliant, and competitive enterprises. This approach aligned with the guiding principles of market systems development and built upon KISAN’s established network of private sector partners, hundreds of local service providers, and thousands of farmers who served as models for promoting a private sector-led development approach. By expanding the project’s geographical reach and leveraging Nepal’s decentralized local governance structure, KISAN II contributed to increased sales and incomes for farmers, enterprises, and producer organizations, while strengthening sustainable agricultural market systems throughout the project period.

The project promoted climate-smart agriculture, strengthened private-sector service delivery, expanded irrigation infrastructure, improved access to technologies and inputs, and supported policy development at provincial and local levels. More than 113,000 farmers adopted climate-resilient technologies, while over 2,700 irrigation schemes were established. Further, the project enhanced collaboration among farmers, private-sector actors, local governments, and extension systems, resulting in increased productivity, improved market access, and strengthened resilience of farming communities.
