NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
BRACE implementation focused on strengthening capacity of municipal governments while linking to the provincial and central government for up-and-out scaling/policy uptake and leveraging funds. The initiative provided technical and knowledge support to government programmes, including the Climate Smart Village and Climate Change Model Programme, through the RMS Resilience Framework.
BRACE worked closely with implementing partners and municipal governments to strengthen local resilience-building processes and establish regional learning hubs, enabling other municipalities and stakeholders to visit, exchange experiences, and learn from demonstrated practices.
This initiative worked jointly with the implementing partners and municipalities to support the process and develop regional learning hubs for other municipalities to visit and learn. The initiative leveraged its networks while maintaining a multistakeholder partnership with GIZ, EU and other development partners implementing activities in the project areas along with central and provincial government authorities and line agencies to strengthen coordination, knowledge sharing, and the sustainability and wider application of project approaches.
Key Achievements
The Climate-Resilient Agriculture (CRA) Initiative achieved significant results in promoting climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural practices across Surkhet, Humla, and Dailekh. Key achievements included the establishment of model climate-resilient farms and Community Learning Centers (CLCs), which served as important platforms for demonstrating, promoting, and disseminating CRA technologies and practices.
The project conducted field-level farmer trainings and province-level training for lead farmers, strengthening farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in climate-resilient agriculture. A capacity-building training for agriculture intermediaries across Karnali Province was also completed. In addition, a traveling seminar facilitated knowledge exchange among farmers, local government representatives, project partners, and other stakeholders.
The initiative made important contributions to knowledge management and dissemination through the development of fact sheets and knowledge products covering different CRA practices. Informational flyers on technologies such as Jholmal, physical barriers, vermiwash, and soil cement tanks further supported awareness and adoption among farmers. The identification and promotion of late blight-resistant potato varieties, including Janak Dev, Khumal Ujjywal, and Khumal Upahar, and their recommendation to farmers and local agriculture units were also notable achievements.
The adoption of improved practices generated tangible results among farmers. Vermicomposting and Tricho-compost contributed to increased yields among ginger farmers, while the wider adoption of Jholmal for insect management demonstrated the successful dissemination and uptake of locally appropriate climate-resilient technologies.
Community engagement was another key achievement. More than 1,200 visitors accessed the CLCs to learn about climate-resilient and chemical-free farming practices. Cross-learning visits involving lead farmers from Surkhet and Dailekh facilitated the exchange of experiences and good practices. Local governments also demonstrated ownership by allocating resources to promote CLCs and indigenous crop programmes, reflecting increased institutional commitment to climate-resilient agriculture.
The CRA Initiative strengthened farmer capacity, local institutional engagement, knowledge sharing, and adoption of climate-resilient agricultural practices. The initiative also strengthened collaboration with local governments and other stakeholders and promoted farmer-centered approaches to action research. The experiences and learning generated through the project provided a useful foundation for sustaining and scaling climate-resilient agricultural practices to enhance agricultural productivity, climate resilience, and long-term food security.
